How it's playing out so far

On the Pre-Order form is a menu that lets you vote for a future set. Here's the breakdown thus far.

  • More Civil War - 36%
  • Revolutionary Continental Line - 20%
  • German Fallschirmjager - 15%
  • WWII U.S. Marines - 12%
  • Vietnam Era U.S. Marines - 8%
  • King Arthur Knights - 8%

And there you have it. If you're at OTSN, stop by and vote for your favorite.

We've also got another little surprise for OTSN visitors as well...

Hi Beau,

I think you have to go with what sells and Civil War will always be popular there. Collectors will always be keen to extend their firing line and 'charge' with as many poses as possible. So that market can never get saturated and it seems people anyway are remaking their 'armies' with the slightly larger more detailed figures that Conte and TSSD are producing. Figures that can fit in with these will sell.

It's hard to find something new but one I can suggest is a German recon set. The motorcycle with side car is iconic and finding a way to have a few of these with associated machine gunners and other specialists would fill one of the few gaps. They could be a Fallschirmager motorcyle battalion (if there was such a thing). All going well there are some options down the track with the Hobbit coming out. No one has ever done Fantasy figures in the toy soldier fashion. A set of dwarves could be used with existing medievals for instance. I think its also the sort of range that could be sold in bookshops - on the shelf with the hundreds of books that exist from that genre.

I'm pleased you're having a go at this.

Hey John!

Excellent Idea!! I was just at "Gen-Con" in Indianapolis yesterday, and got my fill of fantasy figures. There are some excellent sculptors and artists in the field, and I made contact with a few. Who knows what we could delve into in the future, but I wouldn't rule out a Sci-Fi/Fantasy venture at some point. It's such a fertile topic for miniatures... I picked up a figure by Darksword Miniatures yesterday, based upon the "Fire and Ice" series by George R. R. Martin, and it's absolutely perfect.

Thanks for posting and the ideas.

I have to admit that if I started a toy soldier co I would choose dwarves. The "Play Along Toys" AOME 3 inch scale figures only had Gimli as a Dwarve and he fits exactly 54mm so they could fill duel purposes as 54mm they could be Dark Ages warriors and with the AOME collectors they would fill out their much needed Dwarve army.

I pre-ordered and placed my vote for King Arthur Knights but it was a tough decision. I'd also like to see Vietnam Marines and German para's. I would prefer a hold on further Civil War unless you did Union Naval figures. As far as WW2 Conte and TSSD have not yet done Brit Commandos, Partisans, Free French and how about Army Rangers in the Phillopines in that famous secret raid to rescue allied prisoners from the Japs (which can be added on with Phillipino partisans?
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks for the Pre-order Tom. Much appreciated. I always thought that a set of King Arthur Knight would just be awesome. And like you, I've always wanted to see a set of WWII Partisans as well. There are just so many great historical themes just begging to be done in plastic... hopefully we'll be able to touch on several of them.

There are truly many subjects yet to be done in plastic including such American Civil War subjects such as Naval landing parties and
Native American troops such as those commanded by Confederate General Stand Watie.

Beau,
The short list as some cool ideas to be sure. After putting in a pre-order I went and voted for German paras. Love the Airfix set but we need some new blood there. I'll always go for more Civil War, it is my first area of collecting in plastic. The Vietnam theme would be really awesome but only with some VC or NVA to square off against. Just don't get me rolling on the need for a Korean War line...
Best regards,
Mike
