Very exciting. This is a new sculptor, so I'm hoping for the best. All of our previous figures were done in a traditional manner... this will be done using 3D technology. I've seen both good and bad 3D sculpts, so I'm withholding judgement until I see the finished product.

The figure will be from an era that I have not done before.

If it is successfully sculpted, and if it is successfully molded, and if it is successfully produced, and if it survives the long trip from China.... that's a lot of ifs. Assuming all goes well, my plan is to offer individual figures instead of full sets. We are going to run the minimum order, because I have zero faith that there are really that many collectors out there.

I'll post more when I know more.

I've had a couple of back-and-forths with our rep in Hong Kong see what the current state of production looks like. When we left off, we had five Civil War prototypes completed (originally six, but one was permanently lost), and one WWII Marine prototype completed. Really, only a couple of the Civil War prototypes made me happy... the others needed some work done, and would most likely be scrapped.

It's good to re-establish contacts, and who knows, maybe we see if there is any more blood left in this stone. We also had our second child. Knowing we were getting ready to move, I packed up my collection to ready it for a journey across the state.

Well, we didn't move for another year. And when we did move, we ended up in a temporary location. My collection sat idle in cardboard boxes. I also made the decision to fully part with the remaining inventory of our Confederates. I sent them in one big delivery to their new home in San Diego. I did find a couple boxes in storage, so I've been selling them on ebay just to clear some space.

After a year in the temporary place, and a year getting settled into our new place, I finally feel good about tearing open these cardboard boxes, and seeing if I can get back into this hobby.

So I sit here, surrounded by little boxes of plastic toy soldiers that are somehow free of mice and bugs (the collection moved from garages, to storage units, to basements, and back to a garage), and try to remember how I collected all this stuff. There are figures swimming around in here I don't even remember getting!!

But anyway, we'll see what I can get up to in the next few days as I can organize it all. I'll try to take some pictures and feature a few different sets.Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-5103040778547653232016-09-27T10:39:00.002-04:002016-09-27T10:39:28.422-04:00Chicago Show 2016We made the trip up to Chicago for the 2016 Chicago show, and I really enjoyed myself. Got to see a lot of people I hadn't talked to for awhile, and dig through a few buckets of plastic. My son, now 6, got to purchase a few loose figures that he picked out all on his own (all Marx, good taste).

For myself, I mostly picked up older, loose Barzso figures that I needed, including several character figures. Ron was great, helping me figure out what I needed, and what came from which set.
Other highlights included the new Vietnam figures from TSSD, Seeing all of Paragon's cool stuff, and wandering through the Wm. Britain's room, seeing all their cool painted metals. I'm still here, doing real life stuff and all.

I recently put some of my Confederates back up on Ebay, so if you want a couple bags, you can pick them up there. I'm selling (and buying, which is more common) as "r.steal".

I'm going to go basement diving tonight, see what else I can put up for sale.

I attended GenCon this past weekend in Indianapolis, the largest gaming convention in the world. Picked up several pieces of the Wings of Glory game by the maker Ares. It's a cool WWI dog-fighting game with awesome pre-painted miniatures. Whether I'll ever actually play it, I don't know. But I do like the minis.

Just wanted to let you know that I've restocked some dealers with the plastic Confederate Infantry. So if you are in need, check with Toy Soldiers of San Diego, Classic Toy Soldiers, and Michigan Toy Soldiers. I'm sure some of the other dealers probably still have some in stock too.

You can still purchase directly from me, but honestly, it will probably take a day or two longer to get your order out to you.

The Indianapolis toy soldier show is coming up on April 12th, and I'm hoping to be able to make it down there for that. I won't have a booth, but there are usually a few guys there that sell my figures, either the Marx-Man or the War Store, so be sure to check out their stock.

It must be something in the weather, but I've gotten a few random emails asking whether I'll do another set. The answer is..... I highly doubt it.. Put your faith in TSSD, Austin Miniatures, Paragon, CTS, Barzso, and X-Force. They are all releasing some super cool plastic these days, so check them out if you haven't already.Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-34051057629703984852014-10-08T13:34:00.002-04:002014-10-08T13:34:21.058-04:00WWII Marine Update

Hey All, just got the final pictures of the Marine from the sculptor, and it's all finished up. I had him do a few touch ups on the rifle to get it right. I should receive the sculpt in the next week or so. The guys I have doing my metal figures are currently working on a third run of the Union marching figure, along with prepping a couple more poses for molding and production. Once those are done and in my hands, the Marine will go in for molding and production.

And then all I'll need is for someone to buy them!
These figures were designed to be done as injection molded plastic in China, so converting them to be spin-cast will take some work. They are putting together prices for me right now, and if those look good, we'll go ahead and see if we can get them done in metal.

In the future, the figures may be able to be designed so that resin is a possibility.

Price wise, it really wouldn't make too much of a difference anyway. The figures would probably be about the same... especially at the low volume that we would be making.Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-63583824267497180802014-10-01T09:42:00.000-04:002014-10-01T09:42:37.077-04:00The Union Troops

I dug out a couple old prototypes from what was supposed to be our second set of Civil War last night. Made a few phone calls, and had a good conversation with a manufacturer about all our options in how to get these made in either metal or resin. Both options are on the table, so I'm shipping them out today to see what they can do. I'll let you know what we decide, if anything.

There were six poses intended for that second set. We've already cast one in metal, and I'd love to add the other five to the mix at some point.
I picked up a set of the new Austin Miniatures Marines at OTSN. These are super cool, and will fit perfectly with all your current production WWII figures. I talked with the owners for awhile at Chicago, and got a sneak peak at their Japanese prototypes as well. This is definitely a company to support, as they've got some great figures so far. The figures are available exclusively from Austin Miniatures.Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-3499918728169787652014-09-29T08:51:00.000-04:002014-09-29T08:51:02.641-04:00OTSN 2014WARNING: I didn't take a single picture the entire time. I kept telling myself, "get out the camera, snap a few", and then I'd see something cool, and go flittering off to look at it, completely forgetting about taking a picture. If I had to guess, there will be others who took pictures, and doing a much better job at it that I ever could.

OTSN 2014

Wow, there was soooo much good this year. These are the things that really stood out to me:

*The new Barzso Roman Coliseum: So much cool here. This is Ben Hur on steroids. I love the gladiator and spectator figures, and the sculpting of the coliseum pieces is amazing. Jim, the sculptor, told me a little about the math that had to go into making sure they lined up perfectly. Very impressive piece, and would look go in any collection, if you have the room.

*TSSD's new WWII Germans: There are only four poses, but they are TSSD, so you know they are excellent. They fit perfectly with their other German poses.

*Austin Miniatures American Marines: Dude, these are awesome. They will fit right in with both Conte and TSSD figures. These are cream of the crop type figues, and I can't recommend them enough. Also, this is a newish company, so please be sure to give them your support. Really cool people.

*Marxman's Vietnam figures (plus other eras): I was especially excited to see these up close. I assumed all he had were Vietnam figures, but actually the medieval figures were what blew me away. He said he's still trying to get production perfected (all made in the USA), but I have high hopes for these. Also on display were new WWII Germans.

*Paragon's new Alamo figures and scenics: Always amazed at what Paragon is able to put out every year. Besides having a new set of Alamo figures, he also offers amazing detailed and painted scenic pieces. The western landscapes and the forts are to die for.

*OWN figures: I saw these in Steve Weston's room. There are a variety of different sets, all having to do with Chinese history. You would swear these were made by the top toy soldier companies in the land, based on sculpting. Amazingly detailed and beautiful colors, these would be excellent additions to any collection.

I saw a ton of cool things (dollar bins!!), and very glad I made the trip up this year. Saw a lot of friends, and hopefully made a few new ones. My two regrets from the trip: Accidentally breaking that Barzso figure before I got home, and not saving enough cash for the toll roads.

Oh, one more thing. We stayed at the Embassy Suites, a bit north of the Hyatt. Very nice place to stay. Great breakfast and only a couple minute drive from the show.Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-18546489638681616352014-09-28T23:05:00.002-04:002014-09-28T23:05:14.654-04:00Website Back Up!!
So, I took down my old website. I was tired of paying for the upkeep, and I never updated it. Overall, it was a hassle. Didn't need it anyway. I can keep you up-to-date just as easy with this blog format.

So here is an updated picture of the Marine. Just a bit of work to do on the rifle, and he'll be ready for casting. One thing I'll be curious about is his size. That's always one thing that I won't know exactly until the sculpt arrives and is in my hand.

From left to right, Marx Untouchable, Gay Toys Civilian, Marx Untouchable

Awhile back, while going to a string of local flea markets and yard sales, I picked up a bag of old Marx and MPC figures, mostly G.I.s, Cowboys, and Spacemen. Tucked down in the bag, was the schoolgirl you see in the middle of the picture above. I've put her beside a couple Marx Untouchables for a size comparison. She is nicely sculpted, and if not for the rather tall base, would be a pretty good scale match to Marx.

It took me awhile, but I finally got around to searching who she was made by, and where she came from. Found out that she is from "Gay Toys", probably in the 60's, and was part of a 12 pose set. Pretty fun little find, when all I was expecting was more MPC spacemen!!

My username is r.steal and hopefully this link will work....

Some good stuff, and at least one thing I wouldn't expect anyone to want. I pretty much said so in the ebay description. But hey, to each their own.

One of the things that I posted was an old 21st Century Italian WWII airplane model kit, still in the box. I put up a set of ESCI WWII Russians, and a set of the ESCI Modern Russian Paratroopers. I had an extra bag of a few TSSD sets that I put up as well. Put up a couple of older Britains Deetail sets, and a set of the Pegasus Russian Naval troops.

I also put up a couple sets of my Confederates, if anyone needs some more.

They were in a bag with some Tootsie Toy Military Police figures that I wanted, so I didn't even notice them until I got home. If you know what brand they are and where they come from, I'd be appreciative. They are cast in a fairly hard plastic, and the same size as Marx Germans.

It's coming right up, so start saving your pennies! The Indianapolis Toy Soldier Show will be on April 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's my favorite show (day) of the year. It's not the biggest, but it's by no means small. Plenty of stuff to browse, and a lot of good deals to be had. I've gone the past several years as a dealer, but I realized that I was spending a lot more than I was bringing in, so decided to cut the charade, and just go all out with the shopping.

I'm taking my nephew with me again this year. He's 12 now, and is into toy soldiers on a minor scale. He has decided that he wants Marx Rev War British troops. I have no idea why he has focused on them, but he has, so good for him. That's just what I want to pass onto my impressionable nephew, an irrational compulsive desire to collect colored bits of plastic. Not a bad way to spend your days until shuttled off this mortal coil.

Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-48841806878976009332014-02-25T10:40:00.001-05:002014-02-25T10:40:25.450-05:00Barzso's Battle of ChurubuscoSo there I was, wandering around the antique mall, prattling behind my wife, who was shopping for Pyrex, Fireking, and Josef Dolls, when all of a sudden, my Plastic Radar went off. DING DING DING DING DING!!!! It's a specialized internal signal that has no known origin, but it sends an electronic pulse to my brain whenever there are plastic toy soldiers in the vicinity. I looked around, looked down, and then looked upwards, towards the heavens, and laid eyes on.....

Seriously, here in the middle of Ohio, a Barzso Playset, much less, one that I don't already own??!?

I took it down, expecting to find broken pieces, missing character figures, horribly painted buildings. But nope, a full, mint condition playset, most likely never taken out of the box. Instructions were there, the page of history, all the figures, both character figures, and even the little bag of critters was present and accounted for.

It took me about 3 seconds to decide to buy it ($225, which I thought was a heck of a deal.)

Brought it home, set it up, and immediately started adding in pieces from other sets till I had filled up the table. There is just something about these Barzso Playsets that makes them so exciting. The creativity that goes into these sets make them truly little works of art, of which my poor photography skills don't do justice.

Obviously, most of the pictures include other buildings from the Tripoli set, the Fortified Hacienda, some of the Mexican Lancers, and you'll even notice the Church Bell Tower by Steve Weston. The blood spills come from the Aztecs and Conquistadors playset. A couple of the buildings are TSSD Alamo pieces. I also added in the second set of Mexican Infantry that had a few new poses.

The set contained four unpainted buildings, Mexican Infantry, American Infantry, Texas Rangers, a ton of scenery, the corral, critters such as a wolf, snakes, and a roadrunner, cacti, and two character figures of Robert E. Lee and Santa Anna.

These are some of the things that caught my eye, but ultimately, left behind. In the next post, I'll show off what I did pick up!
We are VERY close to having this Marine ready to go to casting. I know, I know, it's taken awhile. But I think you'll be extremely pleased with the results. All that's left for this guy is the rifle and some pouches. Here's a rundown from where he started, to where he is currently in the sculpting phase.

I wanted to make sure the sculptor and I were on the same page, and sure enough, after comparing our initial thoughts, we were right there together. Some of the key words we tossed back and forth were "tattered", "veteran", "light", "basics", "realism".
All great works have to start somewhere. We sent the sculptor a few samples of our figures and some competitors figures. We want them to be as close of a size match as possible. Size is the hardest thing to get accomplished really. You never really know how it will stack up until you have it in your hands and compare it to other figures.
Almost done now, only need the fighting gear! I believe the sculptor is going ahead and casting the rifle so that he won't have to do it again on the next figure..... if there's a next figure..... which depends on YOU purchasing one of these guys!
And that's that. The sculptor is super busy working on a few other projects (much more lucrative than mine probably), so he comes back to this guy when he gets a chance. In fact, you should check out a Kickstarter that he has recently contributed sculpt to, Pulp City.

Once done, we'll have him molded and cast in white metal. After that we'll bag him using our own homemade header cards, and put him up for sale on this website. We PROBABLY won't be producing enough to supply dealers, unless there is a larger demand than I anticipate. Hopefully we'll sell enough to justify another figure, but that's up to ya'll.
I've thrown in everybody; Marx, TSSD, Butternut & Blue, Replicants, Italeri, Conte, Barzso, BMC, CTS, CTA, IMEX, Accurate, and of course, my own Cunnyngham figures.

I even tried to get creative with a background. I spent about 5 minutes on it, got bored, and so it looks pretty bad. But it makes me happy, and really, that's what its all about.
I already had some recast Untouchables in powder blue, but needed them in a different color for the bad guys, so I grabbed a set of silver from Classic Recasts. The figures are great, done in a really nice soft plastic. The buildings are from Hobby Bunker, who offer some of the best urban buildings done in foam.
It's a small town news story about cupcakes.... and toy soldiers.... Personally, I think the world would be a better place if everyone had a cupcake with a toy soldier on it. I could really go for one right now!Beauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10213266239495938017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7910253644809612905.post-29875571018936677042014-02-20T09:41:00.003-05:002014-02-20T09:41:43.306-05:00Some Older Star Wars Toy SoldiersThe news about the new Star Wars Command toy soldiers reminded me that I do have a few other figures from a Galaxy Far Far Away stashed in my collection. I picked these up at an antique mall for cheap. I have no idea where they came from.... maybe a board game?? All of the figures are based on The Phantom Menace, so they were probably first released around 1999 when the film was released, but that's just a guess. There are about 20 different poses in all, with Sith done in pink (Pink????) and jedi done in bronze. The sculpting is fairly good, if a little soft. My pictures don't do them justice, as for some reason I didn't seem to get a good focus on them. They are fairly decently sized to standard Army Men, as I've shown below. If someone does know their origin, I'd love to know. I'll try to get some better pictures of the rest of the poses posted soon.
There are various prices for the different sets, but it looks like a basic "Battle Pack" of 8 soldiers and 1 general will be $5, while other sets with vehicles will be more, depending on the vehicle. Looks like the biggest set will be the Star Destroyer set which will cost $60. Here are the Hasbro Promo Pics. There are a lot more on flickr and google images, just search "Star Wars Command 2014". Looks like a pretty good variety of figures.

UPDATE: Posted a YouTube video below, shows off some more of the figures, and how the vehicles work.
